Why Creative Thinking Still Matters in the Age of AI

Updated: 4 days ago

Creative thinking, often described as "thinking outside the box," is one of the most valuable skills we can develop. It allows us to solve problems, express ourselves, and see the world from different perspectives. Whether we realise it or not, thinking is part of everything we do—from deciding what to wear in the morning to finding solutions to challenges throughout the day.

Today, however, we live in a world where artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of our everyday lives. It helps us write emails, answer questions, generate images, and complete tasks in seconds. While these tools are incredibly useful, our growing reliance on AI can sometimes make us forget the importance of exercising our own creative minds.

So, what does it mean to be creative?

Creativity is the ability to produce something original using our imagination, ideas, and experiences. Although some people appear naturally artistic or inventive, every person is born with creative potential. Like any other skill, creativity grows stronger the more we use it. The more we practise imagining, experimenting, and creating, the more confident and capable we become.

Creativity shaped by emotions, personal experiences, curiosity and imagination. Creative Thinking in the age of AI

There's no denying that AI is a powerful tool. It can generate ideas quickly, save time, and even inspire us when we're feeling stuck. But speed doesn't always equal originality. AI creates content based on patterns and existing information, while human creativity is shaped by emotions, personal experiences, curiosity, and imagination. These are the qualities that give our work authenticity and meaning.

Take art as an example. AI can generate an image from a simple prompt within seconds, but it may not always capture the depth, emotion, or unique vision that an artist has in mind. An artist carefully considers composition, proportions, colours, textures, and storytelling. Every brushstroke or pencil line reflects a personal thought or feeling. The creative journey—from the first idea to the finished artwork—is often just as rewarding as the final piece itself.

Whether it's painting, drawing, sculpting, or working with mixed media, each artwork carries a personal touch that cannot be replicated. It is this individuality that makes human creativity so special.

Rather than replacing creativity, AI should be viewed as a tool that supports it. It can help us brainstorm ideas, explore new possibilities, or handle repetitive tasks, allowing us to focus on what humans do best: imagining, creating, and expressing ourselves.

As technology continues to evolve, nurturing our creativity becomes more important than ever. By continuing to draw, build, write, invent, and explore, we keep our minds active and our ideas uniquely our own. After all, while AI can assist us in creating, it is human imagination that gives our creations heart, purpose, and soul.
